Janet’s Review: This is the third book in Stephanie Rowe’s Ever After Series and I have to say without a doubt, it is the very best. Each book in this awesome series is a contemporary romance with an underlining theme of a classic Fairy Tale. In Prince Charming Can Wait, I found the tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast.
As with the other books, Prince Charming Can Wait can be read as a stand-alone, but if you haven’t read the first two books, I would highly recommend reading them for the sheer pleasure.
Beauty come to us in the character of Emma Watson, she comes from a traumatic past that has left her emotionally scarred and scared to trust, especially her own judgment when it comes to men . Everyone she has ever loved has always left her. Now she has built a wall around her heart that was meant to protect her, but is slowly draining her of life. Even being surrounded by her two loving and caring best friends, she can’t help feeling all alone. She can’t fight the jealousy she feels burning inside, that her best friends have found happiness with the men they fell in love with. But, even then, Emma wouldn’t allow anyone to draw close to her. Till one night, when she sees Harlan Shea, brother of her best friend and everything changes.
Harlan has just come back to town after disappearing for the past year, without any warning. Something he has done many times in the past. No one knows what Harlan does or where he goes, not even his sister and that’s the way he likes it. Let me tell you, He is one messed up soul. His emotional wounds run so deep, to the point that the only thing he can see when he looks into the mirror is a monster.
Emma calls to Harlan’s soul like no other women has ever before. In a moment of weakness and temptation he reaches out to Emma and to her surprise, she allows it. It was breathtaking to see two tortured souls coming together to find peace in each other’s arms. During that moment, Harlan confides in Emma and shares his dark secret, needing to feel connected with someone. Emma has become his lifeline.
While Emma can also see the monster in Harlan and that scares her, she also sees something else… a kind, gentle, loving man, but Harlan refuses to see anything but the beast that dwells in him. He knew he couldn’t give Emma what she needed but at the same time, he couldn’t let her go. Emma needed Harlan with the same passion but allowed her fear to keep her chained to her own insecurities.
Watching these two broken souls struggle with their feelings for each other and the struggles they were each having within themselves was heart breaking to say the least. There were times that I wanted to shout at Harlan and times I wanted to slap Emma upside her thick head. Then, there were times all I could do was weep for both of them. Stephanie Rowe, once again was able draw out almost every emotion a person can have.
And there were times the dialog was as intense as the bedroom scenes were scorching hot, Emma and Harlan where dynamite together (even if they couldn’t see it) and I loved reading every word of this book.
I couldn’t wait to see how our Beauty was finally going to save the Beast from himself. Or does the Beast save Beauty this time?
One of the things I really enjoyed was we weren’t just giving a Happy Ever After, we were also shown a peek of how they were doing after the fact. It was one of the most heart touching sections to the book. If I ever feel the need to read something that will rock my soul to a deep depth, it would be the end of Prince Charming Can Wait.
Writing this review has been tough, in the fact that I don’t want to give away, any of the magnificent story line and ruin the pleasure of this book for anyone. It was a modern day re-telling of a splendid Fairy Tale.
Cindy’s Review: The common theme in this series is angst. The couple’s have to overcome unbearable anguish from their pasts and the burdens that weighs on them of not knowing if or when salvation will come.
Harlan Shea is the brother of Astrid Monroe who was the heroine of Fairytale Not Required. All we knew of Harlan was that he was a loner that disappeared for months on end. Due to his childhood he has refused to ever get emotionally involved with anyone including his sister. His greatest fear is dying alone and no one caring. He’s always noticed Emma Watson and could see that she had just as many demons as he had. On a trip back to Birch Crossing after a mission to see his sister he finds Emma on the dock looking so sad and lost and he wants her to be his contact that’s called when he dies and ask her to marry him.
Emma Watson is finally free from a marriage that left her broken. She is scared of ever trusting a man again but there is something about Harlan that calls to her. Due to her own childhood she has become attached to a 5 year old girl who is being bounced around in foster care. When she offers to foster her she is told they would never let a single woman foster a child. So when Harlan proposes she sees it as a way to get what she wants while not having to deal with a husband as he will always be away on missions.
What these two lost souls didn’t count on was the needs they filled in each other. Oh they defiantly tried to fight it and of course caused each other more angst but going on the journey with them as they fought their demons and fell in love was worth the tears.
