What a great book. From the prologue to the last page your riveted to the story. This is a true psychological thriller.
Definition of that is – Psychological thriller is a fictional thriller story which emphasizes the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional states. There is a dissolving sense of reality, moral ambiguity, and complex and tortured relationships between obsessive and pathological characters.
Melvin Royal is a serial killer who fooled the world including his wife and 2 kids. In a twist of fate he is caught at the beginning of this book by accident and sentenced to death. But his reign of terror does not end there.
Gina Royal was content in her marriage and loved being a stay at home mom. She had no idea she was married to a monster and when he is arrested she too is arrested and tried as his accomplice. She is acquitted of course but her and the kids are marked by every sicko out there with death threats and vile comments. For 4 years she and the kids have been on the run changing their identities as needed. They are currently in a small town living in a house on Stillhouse Lake. Gina is now Gwen Proctor and hopes that they can stay awhile as the constant running and having to get new identities along with their father being a serial killer has really started to take a toll on her kids.
Gina was a meek wife who never asked any questions and just obeyed her husband. Gwen is a gun toting fierce momma bear who would do anything to protect her kids. She will no longer be anyone’s victim. But even though she can take care of herself now, her ex and the past have taken quite a psychological toll on her and she borders on the paranoid state at all times. She trust no one and rides her kids hard about safety and following the rules she has in place to make sure they stay safe. At times this seemed excessive but as the book goes along it becomes clear she has every reason to still be leary and overly protective.
I’ve read other reviews on this book and one thing not mentioned is this isnt a standalone book. There are huge cliffhanger elements at the end. Dont let this deter you from reading though as you get enough closure on somethings – but then again only to be shocked at the new things told in the last paragraph – BUT its a great psychological thriller with one twisted killer who is an expert at manipulating but may have created his own nemesis in his ex wife who will do anything to stay alive to make sure her kids are protected.
